The Beauty Products I Stopped Buying After 50
Introduction
One of the biggest surprises about getting older is that my beauty routine has become much simpler.
In my 30s and 40s, I enjoyed trying new makeup products, luxury brands, and beauty trends. Like many women, I believed that more products would help me look younger.
Now that I’m in my 50s, I’ve discovered something different.
For me, healthy-looking skin is no longer about covering imperfections. It’s about keeping my skin hydrated, comfortable, and natural-looking.
These are the beauty products I rarely buy anymore—and why.
1. Heavy Foundation
This is probably the biggest change in my routine.
I used to think foundation was essential for creating perfect skin.
As I got older, however, I noticed that foundation often settled into enlarged pores and fine lines.
Instead of making my skin look smoother, it sometimes made texture more noticeable.
Today, I rarely wear foundation.
Instead, I focus on skincare and sunscreen.
On days when I want a more even complexion, I prefer using a tone-up sunscreen rather than a full-coverage foundation.
My skin looks fresher, lighter, and more natural.
2. Dark or Heavy Makeup
When I was younger, I enjoyed experimenting with stronger makeup looks.
Today, I avoid heavy eye makeup and intense contouring.
I’ve noticed that too much color around my eyes or cheeks can actually make my skin look older.
Instead, I prefer soft, natural-looking makeup that brightens my face without drawing attention to wrinkles or skin texture.
Less really has become more.
3. Powder Products
I rarely use powder products anymore.
As skin becomes drier with age, powder can sometimes emphasize dryness and texture.
Even luxury powders from brands like Lancôme or Chanel don’t change that reality.
No matter how expensive the product is, too much powder can make mature skin look less fresh.
I now prefer products that leave a natural, hydrated finish.
4. Matte Lipsticks
This is another product category I rarely buy today.
Many trendy matte lipsticks look beautiful on younger skin, but they don’t work as well for me anymore.
My lips have become drier with age, and matte formulas tend to make that dryness more obvious.
Instead, I reach for tinted lip balms.
They provide moisture, feel comfortable, and add just enough color.
Most days, I even use the same tinted lip balm on both my lips and cheeks for a natural flush of color.
5. Daily Sheet Masks
This one may surprise some K-beauty fans.
Sheet masks are incredibly popular in Korea, and I still use them occasionally.
However, I no longer use them every day.
For some reason, frequent use sometimes leaves my skin feeling itchy.
Over time, I found that my skin responds better to simple hydration.
Instead of reaching for a sheet mask every night, I often apply a generous layer of moisturizer and leave it on my skin for about 10 to 15 minutes before gently spreading it across my face.
This simple habit has become one of my favorite ways to support my skin during dry seasons.
What I Buy Instead
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve shifted my focus away from makeup and toward skincare.
The products I repurchase most often are surprisingly simple:
- Hydrating moisturizers
- Gentle toner pads
- Sunscreen
- Skin barrier-supporting products
- Lip balms with moisturizing ingredients
Rather than trying to hide my skin, I focus on helping it look healthy and comfortable.
The Two Sunscreens I Actually Use Most Often
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that sunscreen has become far more important than foundation.
Instead of trying to cover my skin with makeup, I prefer products that help my skin look naturally healthier.
These are the two sunscreens I reach for most often.
Dr.G Brightening Up Sun+
When I want a naturally brighter complexion without wearing foundation, this is usually the product I choose.
Menopause has made my skin tone look more uneven, and I sometimes experience facial redness as well.
The Dr.G tone-up sunscreen helps neutralize some of that redness and gives my skin a brighter appearance without looking overly made up.
On many days, this is the only complexion product I wear.
Why I Like It
- Natural tone-up effect
- Helps reduce the appearance of redness
- Lightweight and comfortable
- Can replace foundation on simple makeup days
Goongbe Waterfull Sun Lotion
On days when I don’t want to think about makeup at all, I often reach for the Goongbe Waterfull Sun Lotion.
Although it leaves a slight white cast, I find it extremely gentle and comfortable on my skin.
Because it was originally developed for children, the formula feels mild and non-irritating.
One thing I particularly appreciate is how easy it feels to cleanse off at the end of the day.
When I’m staying home, running errands, or simply feeling lazy, this is often my sunscreen of choice.
Why I Like It
- Very gentle formula
- Comfortable for sensitive skin
- Lightweight texture
- Great for simple everyday use
My Current Beauty Philosophy
At 50, my goal is no longer perfect skin.
My goal is healthy-looking skin.
I’ve learned that hydration often makes a bigger difference than makeup.
A well-moisturized face naturally looks brighter, smoother, and more refreshed.
That’s why I spend more time caring for my skin and less time covering it.
Final Thoughts
The beauty products I buy today are very different from the products I bought twenty years ago.
I no longer chase every trend or believe that expensive makeup guarantees better results.
Instead, I focus on hydration, sunscreen, and simple products that make my skin feel comfortable.
For me, beauty after 50 isn’t about adding more products.
It’s about knowing which products I can finally stop buying.
