Why I Gave Up on Home Beauty Devices
Best selling Korean Skincare device
If you’ve been following Korean beauty trends lately, you’ve probably noticed that home beauty devices are everywhere.
LED masks, radiofrequency devices, and products like the Medicube AGE-R series have become incredibly popular.
Many promise firmer skin, fewer wrinkles, and a more youthful appearance.
As someone who loves skincare, I was naturally curious too.
In fact, years ago I purchased a home-use fractional resurfacing device that cost about 300,000 KRW.
At the time, I hoped it would improve my skin texture and help with signs of aging.
Unfortunately, my experience was very different from what I expected.
The Device I Bought Years Ago
The device I purchased worked similarly to a home version of fractional laser treatments.
The idea sounded appealing.
Create controlled micro-injuries in the skin and encourage renewal.
In reality, however, I found it extremely painful.
Every time I used it, my skin felt irritated and uncomfortable.
Because of that, I struggled to use it consistently.
Eventually, the device ended up sitting in a drawer.
Looking back, I realized that buying the device was easy.
Using it regularly was the hard part.
Why I Didn’t See Results
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that consistency matters more than almost anything else in skincare.
Many beauty devices require weeks or even months of regular use before noticeable improvements appear.
The problem was that I simply couldn’t stick with it.
But there was another issue.
I didn’t fully understand how important aftercare was.
Whenever I used the device, my skin felt more sensitive afterward.
Looking back, I should have paid much more attention to hydration, sunscreen, and allowing my skin enough time to recover!!
There were times when I became careless about sun protection after treatment.
I also didn’t focus enough on barrier repair.
As a result, I felt that pigmentation became more noticeable and my skin often looked more irritated than refreshed.
Whether the device itself was responsible or not, I learned that no beauty treatment works well without proper skincare afterward.
Today’s Trend: LED Beauty Devices
The beauty device market has changed significantly since then.
Today, LED masks and light-based devices are among the most popular options in Korea.
Many people prefer them because they are generally more comfortable and less intimidating than older resurfacing devices.
Some studies have suggested that specific wavelengths of LED light may help improve skin appearance and support collagen production.
The technology is certainly interesting.
But after my previous experience, I have become much more cautious about investing in expensive devices.
For now, I have chosen not to purchase one.
What Helped My Skin More

Ironically, the biggest improvements in my skin did not come from a beauty device.
They came from much simpler habits.
Daily Sunscreen
This is the one step I never skip.
Especially after using retinoids, I became much more aware of how important sun protection is.
Consistent Hydration
After menopause, my skin became noticeably drier.
Keeping my skin hydrated made a bigger difference than I expected.
Skin Barrier Care
Whenever my skin feels irritated, I focus on calming and repairing rather than adding more active ingredients.
D-Panthenol Cream
This has become one of my favorite pharmacy products when my skin feels stressed or overtreated.
Torriden Dive-In Multi Pad
Although I don’t use it every day, I love the convenience and lightweight hydration it provides.
Moisturizer Masking
One of my favorite personal skincare habits is applying a thick layer of moisturizer and leaving it on my skin for about 10 to 15 minutes before gently spreading the remainder.
It’s simple, inexpensive, and surprisingly comforting during dry seasons.
My Personal Rule at 50
At this stage of my life, I no longer chase every new beauty device.
I focus on habits I can actually maintain every day.
I’ve learned that healthy skin is usually the result of small daily actions rather than dramatic treatments.
A good sunscreen.
A reliable moisturizer.
Patience.
Consistency.
These things may not be as exciting as the latest beauty technology, but they have helped my skin more than any device I’ve ever purchased.
Final Thoughts
I understand why beauty devices are so popular.
The promise of younger-looking skin from the comfort of home is certainly appealing.
But my own experience taught me something important.
No device can replace good skincare habits.
If I had to choose between an expensive beauty device and a simple routine that includes sunscreen, hydration, and skin barrier care, I would choose the simple routine every time.
Because in the long run, consistency has been the most effective beauty treatment of all.
